Hmmmm, too high brow for me, but I agree with the basic premise of the importance of the individual...and I also agree with Saul Klein who says "No one is as smart as everyone".For me that means that my "collection" of individuals is integral to the success of not only themselves but any one else who wants to participate in the conversation(s) that we hold.Any rate, good post Bill. Plenty of food for thought.

Bill - It is the communities that magnify the individual's efforts. John in his post discusses the value of an individual which I agree with as there are no communities without individuals. However he doesn't value the power of a community when it has the right mix of individuals. Another definition of Team that I have liked is "Together everyone achieves more". It all comes down to proper engagement. Thanks for all you do in the SM space.

Gloria; Your involvement in social media and the resultant success that I have observed all seems to result from your involvement in communities both on-line and in the physical world. Those communities exist whether we acknowledge them or not, and the need to engage the individuals that comprise them is key to any social media efforts we make. Joe; Great point about the need to make a genuine and selfless contribution to the communities and people you engage with. Tara Hunt makes the point in her book "The Whuffie Factor" as does Chris Brogan in his book "Trust Agents" -

I think that respect for individuals as well as the individuals value added, commitment to the common cause, and the willingness to make personal sacrifice for the good of the community is what creates synergy ie. the community exceeds the sum of it's parts. If those characteristics are lacking, the community is dysfuntional if it exists at all. 100 smart people working separately will not achieve what the same 100 people will acheive as a community with a reason to exist.

Great post Bill! You are absolutely correct. It is the communities that we choose to join that help support our individual efforts. Communication does occur most effectively one to one but when we use the tools currently available to allow that one to one communication to to spread to our communities, we all benefit.
